Shand Taylor Lawyers is proud to share the inspiring story of Ron Petts. Ron is 69 years old and will soon be admitted as a lawyer.
After four decades working as a registered nurse, predominantly in the field of mental health and drug and alcohol services, Ron retired from nursing in 2016. Not one to rest on his laurels, Ron has since completed a law degree and will soon complete a Masters of Legal Practice at the ANU.
Having gained those legal qualifications, the only thing preventing Ron from achieving his goal of becoming a lawyer was the need for him to complete 20 days of work experience in a law firm. Unfortunately, Ron couldn't find a firm which was willing to take on a law graduate for work experience at the age of 69.
However Shand Taylor client and Queensland’s Australian of the Year 2021 Dr Dinesh Palipana put Ron in contact with our firm and we were delighted for Ron to undertake his 20 days of practical legal training over the last 2 months. Today is Ron’s last day at Shand Taylor and he is now able to apply for admission as a legal practitioner. Ron has asked Shand Taylor partner John Sneddon to move his admission in the Supreme Court of Queensland in early 2021.
“We are proud to have played a very small part in Ron’s journey to the law. Ron’s background in the health sector and his legal skills will make him a wonderful asset to the legal profession”, John said. “It is hard to believe no-one else was prepared to give Ron a go.”
For his part, Ron has enjoyed his time at Shand Taylor. “It has been a wonderful experience. This is the best place I have ever worked,” he said.
Ron now plans to move to Western Australia and combine his expertise in the health sector and the law by working in the field of dispute resolution as a mediator. We wish him all the very best.
